Plan to Revitalise your Roof in Warmer Weather

It may seem remiss of us to talk about warm weather during bad weather months, but planning is key for making your roof ready for the warmer months ahead.

Because if your home isn’t cool when warmer weather hits, it may be because of a fault with your roof.

In this blog,  we explain what may cause these faults, and how our services help to prevent them.

The Importance of your Roof in Warm Weather

You might assume that when the weather is warm and dry, your roof doesn’t do much more than keep you in the shade.

In actual fact, it’s working hard above your head to keep you nice and cool during the warmer months.

A traditional pitched or sloped roof is packed with insulation. This is just as important in warmer months as  winter, as it improves airflow and ensures that the heat dissipates properly, so that there are fewer sweaty nights.

Flat roofs still have insulation, but aren’t as effective, so you might need to find other methods to stay cool such as fans or dehumidifiers.

When your roof is in great condition, you can rest assured that it will keep you cool. But if it feels hotter inside than it should, it could be because of a fault or damage.

Seasonal Roof Damage

It’s less likely that your roof will be damaged in warmer months, as despite the typical British summer’s best efforts, there is less rainfall, lower wind speeds, and 0 risk of snow or ice. But warmer months are also the best time to focus on getting your roof in its best shape for the rest of the year.

Also,  if there are some spring showers or storms, damage can still occur. The most common being leaks.

Blocked or damaged gutters can direct water towards your home instead of away from it, allowing moisture to seep through weaknesses in the outer walls and create damp patches on the inside, usually around the top of your walls.

If a roof tile is damaged or becomes dislodged, it will be even easier for even light rain to get into your home. This will damage the vulnerable wooden supports of some homes and ruin your insulation, which is why your home not cooling down in warmer months is a tell-tale sign of potential roof damage.

We always recommend checking for leaks or dampness after any heavy rain, as they may be in attics or in areas you wouldn’t notice, such as behind wardrobes. Damp can grow mould very quickly; if ignored it will be a major health risk.

Roof tiles, when fixed securely in place and in good condition, are fantastic at preventing leaks. But even the most advanced roof tiles can’t cover every inch of your roof, so there will be parts that are more at risk of damage than others.

Roof flashing is a material used to create a barrier between parts of your roof. It’s most commonly seen at edges where the roof of an extension meets a wall, so that there isn’t a gap between the brick and the tiles. Flashing is also used around chimneys and skylights for the same reason. However, if your flashing is damaged or wasn’t fitted properly, leaks are almost guaranteed. This is why it’s so important to check your roof, or have your roof inspected professionally, every few years minimum.

When to Work on your Roof

Due to the better weather, spring and summer is the best time to work on your roof. You’ll have multiple days or weeks of sunshine that won’t delay a roof fitting or repair. So if there are any issues, or your roof tiles are due to be replaced, spring and summer is the best time to get the job done.

Even if there aren’t any immediate issues, you should have a close look at your roof to see if there are any faults that are due to worsen over time. For the average person, this is a challenge, as you won’t notice a slightly unstuck tile or torn flashing.

If your roof is covered in dirt and moss, this will obscure the tiles making it trickier to spot issues.

Moss and dirt also encourage insects and the pests that feed on them, which will be out and about a lot when the weather gets warmer,  looking for an easy meal. Pecking, digging, and poking will damage tiles so that the next rainstorm can do a lot of damage.
