The Increasing Impact Climate Has On Our Roofs

A sad fact of modern life is that extreme climate events have become ever more common.

Across the UK and Europe – and indeed globally – flooding is more common, so too other previously rare occurrences such as major heatwaves, earthquakes and storms of huge magnitude.

The evidence for this change is clear, with numerous research papers highlighting the trends.

Indeed, we only have to use our own eyes to see the extremes of weather that lead to destruction both here and abroad.

On a society-wide level, the impact is huge, from changing plans for where to build through to the challenges of protecting towns and villages from the impact of this new normal.

What though for the individual homeowner, what does a more extreme climate mean for them?

For the very worst incidents, there might not be much that can be done in advance – if a hurricane hits your house it is going to do some damage and require a call to the insurers to put it right.

However, those occurrences remain, thankfully, rare.

Instead, what we see is more rainfall and more regular storms, we see weather patterns usually reserved for winter come at random earlier in the year.

The British climate has always been changeable, now it is swinging drastically.

We believe that the need for good general maintenance of your house has never been greater. We have written in this blog before about how prevention is better than cure, and that is ever more true.

In the example of storms, if aspects of a property are in poor repair then there is a good chance that damage will occur, this potentially impacting both the outside and inside of the house. There will then be the likely struggle of trying to find a high quality, reputable builder or similar to carry out repairs, at the exact time everyone else needs this service.

The cost can be high too – insurance may cover some, but there is still likely to be an excess to pay and so the homeowner is still at a loss.

When the property is in good repair, there are far less likely to be issues. The roof and guttering do their job, the walls are damp proofed and so the rain lashing against them does not create damp.

Preparing for inevitable bad weather may also mean having the drains checked – can they cope with a huge surge in rainwater? What about the garden and outside, are their tree branches that could create issues in storm winds?

No part of your property is more exposed, or more essential to overall maintenance than the roof.

As any homeowner will know, any sudden problems with the roof also tend to be expensive fixes – the idea of a complete re-roof enough to keep many awake at night.

This is why we are so passionate about recommending annual roof checks.

Cynics among you may suggest we would say that – after all, we are renowned for performing roof maintenance checks and also applying a coating that ensures roofs are better able to withstand the elements.

And to some extent we might agree – naturally, as a business, it is in our interest for people to use our service. However, that does not mean that the homeowner does not benefit too. It is mutually beneficial.

Roof maintenance ensures the roof ridge is in good condition, so too the tiles. It ensures there are no areas for the storm or rain to attack and create further carnage.

Moss and any growth is removed, the guttering and drains checked. It is the equivalent of the MOT and service for your car, giving you the reassurance that it remains in great condition and won’t let you down when you need it most.

Five-Step Cleaning Process

For homeowners, we provide the following five-step process

  • Stage 1 Full risk assessment and survey followed by full on-roof inspection
  • Stage 2 A total clean using a turbo wash, removing all moss and lichen build up. Capping off of all gutters and removal of waste
  • Stage 3 Replacement of ALL DAMAGED AND BROKEN TILES, re-mortar of ridges, hips and valleys where necessary.
  • Stage 4 Full microbiological biocide treatment applied to impregnate and prevent future germination. This kills any ground in micro spoors, it sits on the roof tiles and keeps working, and will reactivate after rainfall, and will prevent any signs of regrowth in the future
  • Stage 5 Total clean down of gutters, windows, facia & soffits, house and surrounding area
